Galway Bay Fm newsroom- There has been a step forward in the upgrade of Leenaun wastewater treatment plant.
Galway County Council has granted planning permission to Irish Water to upgrade the water treatment plant building and provide a new reservoir.
There is currently a boil water notice in place for Leenaun over cryptosporidium fears.
That notice is not expected to be lifted until next year.
In granting permission for the upgrade county planners have imposed 6 conditions.
One condition stipulates that mitigating measures must be undertaken to ensure no adverse impact on nearby European sites.
Councillor Eileen Mannion says she hopes this will eventually lead to an end to the cryptosporidium fears.
