Galway Bay fm newsroom – Hundreds of people gathered in the Galway City this afternoon to show their solidarity with migrants and refugees fleeing to Europe.
As part of a Europe-wide Day of Action, a number of groups gathered in Eyre Square to address the crowds who gathered to show their support for those seeking refuge from the war in Syria and other humanitarian crises.
Organiser Joe Loughnane of Galway Anti Racism Network was joined by speakers from the Galway Alliance Against War, the Galway-Calais Refugee Support Group and the Giddy Biddies Infinity Project – a socially engaged art installation looking at the issue of forced migration.
Speakers called for an end to the war in Syria as well as an increase in the number of refugees which Ireland is to take as part of the recently-unveiled European quota system.
