Galway Bay fm newsroom – Clean-up operations are underway in some coastal areas of Galway following flash flooding overnight.

Gardai say there were instances of flooding, overnight, along much of the R336 coast road from Barna as far as Rosmuc.

Inverin, Rossaveal and Carraroe were particularly badly hit.

A number of business-owners in Inverin spent the night trying to keep floodwaters at bay after the river burst its banks. They were assisted by workers from Udaras na Gaeltachta and a large number of young volunteers from the local community.

Some businesses in Inverin were unable to open today.

There’s also damage today to a section of the N59 between Maam Cross and Recess, which Galway county council crews have been working overnight to repair it.

It followed an orange weather warning for western and southern counties yesterday.

Evelyn Cusack of Met Eireann said that by 2pm yesterday (Friday), 40 milimetres of rain had falled in western counties – the situation continued to worsen over the course of the evening.

By midnight last night, Gardai had reports of flooding on several parts of the R336. The road is passable this morning.

Gardai in Clifden say the N59 is passable with caution.

Connemara Councillor Eileen Mannion is appealing to motorists using the N59, between Maam Cross and Recess, to slow down today.
