Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Tánaiste has described Galway as one of Ireland’s key cultural hotspots, and says the arts scene in the city and county is ‘sheer genius.’

It comes as the Galway 2020 team prepare to present Galway’s bid for European Capital of Culture to a team of adjudicators tomorrow.

Joan Burton has today officially opened a new Intreo Centre at Fairgreen road in the city, and a new research facility at NUI Galway.

Speaking to FYI Galway, the Tanaiste commended the strength of Galway’s cultural stragegy.

The city’s new Intreo office provides a full range of social welfare services that had previously been provided from five separate offices throughout the city.

Joan Burton says the office will provide a vastly improved service to the people of Galway

A small group of anti-austerity protesters gathered at the new Fairgreen office ahead of Joan Burton’s arrival.

The group says the current government has done little to help alleviate poverty and homelessness, and a new regime is needed:

Earlier today, Tánaiste Joan Burton officially opened a major new research building at NUI Galway.

The Institute for Lifecourse and Society is a newly designated research centre for the applied social sciences.

The institute brings together existing work in relation to the elderly, children, families and people with disabilities.
