Galway Bay fm newsroom – City CEO Brendan McGrath is to meet with dog welfare group MADRA on Friday in an attempt to resolve the row over the care of abandoned dogs.
There were fresh clashes between councillors and officials over the matter at last night’s meeting.
Cllr Pearse Flannery said as we bid for city of culture status there’s nothing too cultured about this ongoing row.
He criticised the delays, the fact that dogs are being stored in temporary facilities and the lack of information on procedures and costs and plans to provide cold storage for dogs bodies.
Director of services Tom Connell said it was his fault if he overlooked giving some of the costs.
However in response to comments made by Cllr Flannery he stressed the city council is running a responsible dog welfare service.
Cllr Catherine Connolly says MADRA have stuck to their plan and will save the council money while treating dogs humanely.
CEO Brendan McGrath said currently there’s no funding for MADRA but councillors can try and find the funding in the 2016 budget which is being discussed next Monday.
