Galway Bay fm newsroom – A Galway East TD is calling on the Government to urgently make changes to the averaging system used to calculate pension entitlements.
Deputy Anne Rabbitte has told the Dáil that the system primarily discriminates against women – and many feel they’re being ‘singled out’ by the Government.
She told the chamber that some women who began working at age 16 but took a few years out to rear their children before resuming work are now discovering they are not entitled to a full pension.
The current rules see the total number of contributions made examined and averaged out between the first commencement of employment and retirement.

Deputy Rabbitte was quick to chastise Social Protection Minister Leo Varadkar for his absence during the debate
