Galway Bay fm newsroom – A popular school bus route in the city has been reinstated following a local campaign which saw hundreds of pupils take to the streets of the city in protest.
It follows a recent decision from Bus Eireann to terminate services from Westside to Claddagh, Scoil Einde to Seacrest and Claddagh to Westside via Salthill.
Last month, teachers and students from Claddagh National School marched through the city in a colorful procession of banners, music and song to voice their dissent with the cost cutting measure.
The march culminated with the handing in of a petition containing one thousand signatures – and a very vocal demonstration from several hundred children demanding the return of their bus service.
The Westside to Claddagh service is now set to return from Monday in a joint service run by Lally Bus Company in conjunction with Bus Eireann.
The re-instated route will now operate a collection service at 8.20am and return after school at 2.30pm until the end of June.
Councillor Mike Cubbard says it’s a huge relief to see that common sense has prevailed.
