N59 Action Group to lobby Taoiseach during his visit to Connemara today

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The N59 Action Group will hand a letter to An Taoiseach when he visits Connemara this afternoon.

Enda Kenny has arrived in Galway for a series of engagements in the city and county.

The landmark Ireland 2016 Centenary Programme conference gets underway at NUI Galway in the next half hour. (2pm)

The two-day conference entitled ‘The Promise and Challenge of National Sovereignty’, will feature a speech by Taoiseach Enda Kenny this afternoon and Minister for Arts, Heritage and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys tomorrow.

Following the NUIG event, the Taoiseach will travel to Rosmuc for the opening of Ionad Cultúrtha an Phiarsaigh, Conamara at Pearse’s Cottage.

The centre celebrates the cultural wealth of the Gaeltacht, the heritage of the region and the landscape of Connemara.

During his visit to Rosmuc, the N59 Action Group will call on the Taoiseach to help break the logjam which is preventing upgrade work being carried out on the national route from Oughterard to Maam Cross.

Later this evening, Enda Kenny will be back in the city to turn the sod on the new 6 million euro Cardiology Service at the Bons Secours Hospital.

The new unit will treat patients requiring procedures such as angiography, cardiac angioplasty including the insertion of pacemakers.

The new unit involves 20 clinical posts and knock-on jobs in the construction industry.
