Galway Bay fm newsroom – Motorists are advised to expect delays this afternoon as the N59 action group takes its campaign to the city.

The group is leading a ‘go-slow’ procession led by heavy goods vehicles in a bid to highlight its call for long-awaited road infrastructure in Connemara.

An Bord Pleanala refused permission in May for the long-awaited upgrade to the N59 between Maam Cross and Clifden due to environmental concerns.

That decision provoked a fierce backlash – with many claiming that the refusal would set the badly-needed project back 20 years and ultimately put lives at risk.

The action group has gathered some eight thousand signatures as part of a petition calling for vital works to be carried out.

As the campaign is stepped up, a ‘go-slow’ will get underway at 3 this afternoon with the slow-moving procession travelling from Moycullen, through the city and back out west.

Seosaimh O’Cuaig is one of the local organisers – he says the go-slow aims to highlight the need for proper road infrastructure.
