Galway Bay fm newsroom – The President of Ireland says the launch of an Irish Historic Towns Atlas today will provide the people of Galway with a unique opportunity to expand their knowledge of the city’s past.
The atlas is number 28 in a series and is part of a research project by the Royal Irish Academy.
The atlas is co-authored by Jacinta Prunty and Paul Walsh, and Galway is one of 520 towns and cities published internationally.
It features a range of topographical maps supported by detailed text sections including the first printed map of Galway in the early 17th century, an aerial view of Galway in 2014, as well as a unique look at the Claddagh in 1839.
It also sheds light on the importance of flowing water in Galway through the decades as a resource exploited from the foundation of the town for brewing and distilling.
Speaking at the launch at Galway City Museum, President Michael D. Higgins said it’s an important tool for educators and is a vital stepping stone to continued research into our local history.
Co-Author Paul Walsh says it was a local team effort and will help to keep the past alive.
