Galway Bay fm newsroom – The earthworks for the Gort to Tuam motorway have been completed.

The cut-and-fill process is one of the main works for the major infrastructure project, and the Direct Route consortium say these works are now being finalised.

There are around 700 people currently working on the project, and a total of over 2.6 million working hours have been clocked up to date.

Work on structures across the project is progressing well – all structures bar one have commenced construction at this stage.

41 are already substantially complete, and another 8 are nearing completion.

A number of side roads have now been opened as part of the M17/M18 network.

21 local roads along the route are now open to traffic on their new alignments, including roads at Raheen Desmesne, Killeelaun, and Rinn.

Pavement works are underway, and have already progressed significantly on some parts of the new motorway.

The full scheme, including the Tuam Bypass, will open at the same time in early 2018.
