Galway Bay fm newsroom – There were 25 major incidents involving patient care reviewed at Galway’s public hospitals last year.

That’s according to the Saolta Health Care Group, which has published its 2015 report for Galway University Hospitals and Portiuncula Hospital.

Saolta’s annual report for 2015 shows that there were 25 serious incident reviews carried out at Galway’s public hospitals last year.

These are classified as ‘incidents that result in serious harm or death of a patient’ and are managed through a Serious Incident Management Team.

16 of these incidents occured at University Hospital Galway and Merlin Park Hospital, while a further 9 incidents were recorded at Portiuncula in Ballinasloe.

The publication follows the launch of a review at UHG last week after an amputation was performed in a general ward instead of a theatre.

The 2015 report also shows just over 4 thousand general incidents were reported by staff at Galway University Hospitals, while a further one thousand such incidents were reported by staff at Portiuncula.

UHG and Merlin Park Hospital received 817 complaints from the public last year, while Portiuncula was the source of just 80 complaints.

Overall, almost half a million patients attended Galway’s hospitals last year – an increase of around 3% compared to figures for 2014.
