Galway Bay fm newsroom – New figures have revealed that the waiting list at University Hospital Galway is the biggest in the country by a significant margin.

Over 30 thousand people are currently awaiting an appointment at the hospital – a figure that easily surpasses hospitals in both Dublin and Cork.

The latest data from the National Treatment Purchase Fund shows that a record 535 thousand patients were on public hospital waiting lists at the end of September.

33 thousand of these are on lists at University Hospital Galway – which makes the waiting list at the hard-pressed facility the longest in the country by a significant margin.

The Mater and Beaumont hospitals in Dublin follow with waiting lists of 27 thousand patients each, while a further 26 thousand patients are awaiting appointments at Cork University Hospital.

Last month, the Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation claimed that UHG is facing an unprecedented crisis – with medical protocol frequently falling by the wayside as a result of the unsustainable situation.

According to the Irish Times, the latest record levels are the culmination of five straight months of waiting list increases since Simon Harris became Minister for Health.
