Permanent repair works begin on electrical cable off coast of Inis Mor

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A specialist barge is in place off the coast of Inis Mór as permanent repairs begin on an underwater electricity cable.

Inis Meain and Inis Oirr were left without power for four days last month due to a major fault on the cable.

The islanders are currently using power from two 36-tonne generators which were shipped in to Inis Oirr following the outage.

The ESB has now positioned a barge at the fault site, which is located around 2km off the coast of Inis Mór.

Trained divers will work to permanently repair the cable fault, using a special underwater habitat platform.

It’s expected the works will take around two weeks to complete.
