Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Galway cycling campaign has questioned the advice provided by local authorities and other stakeholders for the proposed design of a link road in Parkmore.

It comes as a plan for the long awaited access road at Parkmore Business Park has been refused.

Planning permission was granted by the county council in April for the new link road which the IDA had hoped would alleviate some of the congestion experienced at peak times.

However, that decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanála which has now ruled that the project be rejected.

Concerns had been raised by Galway Cycling Campaign and a local resident over road safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

The IDA will now have to return to the drawing board to consider whether an application will be submitted for a revised plan.

Meanwhile, the city and county councils are assessing options to bring forward plans for improvements to roundabouts and junctions in the busy business district.

Shane Foran of Galway Cycling Campaign says the group is not opposed to the link road or the idea of a new junction.

However he says questions must be asked about the design submitted which he argues is at variance with guidelines and standards.
