Galway Bay fm newsroom – Pressure is mounting on Galway city and county councils to find a solution to long-running traffic congestion at Parkmore.

It comes as a plan for a long awaited access road at Parkmore Business Park has been refused.

Planning permission was granted by the county council in April for the new link road which the IDA had hoped would alleviate some of the congestion.

However, that decision was appealed to An Bord Pleanála which has now ruled that the project be rejected.

Concerns had been raised by Galway Cycling Campaign and a local resident over road safety for pedestrians and cyclists.

Six thousand employees work in the area and there have been repeated calls for action over unacceptable commute times at morning and evening rush hour.

A spokesperson for the city council says the local authority is disappointed following the An Bord Pleanála adjudication and that all options are now being assessed by senior management.

This includes proposals for roundabout improvements in Parkmore and changes to lighting at the junction onto the Monivea Road.

Meanwhile, Galway County Council says it’s working on a proposal to introduce a bus lane along the N17 from the city to the Parkmore turnoff, as well as lighting at the junction.

Liam Gavin, Director of Services with Galway county council says it’s hoped some proposals will come before councillors for discussion in the coming months.
