Galway Bay fm newsroom – There are concerns over future flood mitigation in South Galway after the County Council revealed it had transferred some of its senior engineers to other parts of the county.
Councillors were told at municipal district level this week that engineering staff who had been dealing with flooding in Gort and Portumna have now been transferred to other areas, including Tuam.
However, Galway County Council says every effort is being made to replace staff who have left or moved on to other districts.
Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte, who’s based in Portumna, says the move has created a real sense of anger among residents, who had built up confidence and trust in the engineers that had been working with them since last winter.
This has been reiterated by Portumna based county councillor Ivan Canning.
He says there is a real fear in South Galway that there will be a repeat of last year’s devastation.
