Galway Bay fm newsroom – A councillor has moved to defend the city’s efforts in tackling litter problems.

It comes as Galway city has been ranked as ‘moderately littered’ in the latest national litter league.

The survey by Irish Business Against Litter league ranked the city at 34 out of 40.

The report stated it was disappointing to see some culturally related sites in the survey littered during the period when Galway was making its bid to be European Capital of Culture 2020.

Ballybane was also inspected on this round and over half of the sites surveyed  were found to be littered to some degree.

Labour city councillor Niall McNelis says good work is being done with reduced local authority staff.

He says huge efforts are also being put in to community clean-ups but some management companies need to step up.
