Galway Bay FM Newsroom – A special event to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Galway’s twinning with the French city of Lorient will take place in the city this month.
President Michael D. Higgins will attend the 3 day celebrations which mark one of the oldest twinnings between an Irish and French City.
Galway’s twinning with the city of Lorient in Brittany in North-western France is one of the oldest unions between an Irish and French city, sharing the title with Enniscorthy and Gimont.
The union was founded in 1975 – and this year’s 40th anniversary celebrations promise a range of multicultural events to commemorate the important event.
President Michael D. Higgins is set to visit the city to launch a commemorative exhibition in the Connacht Tribune Print Workshop in the heart of the city.
He’ll be joined by the French Ambassador, City Mayor Frank Fahy, the mayor of Lorient, and representatives from twinning committees in both cities.
The anniversary celebrations will also include theatre and musical performances, art and photo exhibitions, celtic dance workshops, childrens storytelling in Irish and French, and Breton food markets.
The three day event begins on Friday the 18th of this month at 6.30pm, with a special mayoral reception in City Hall to welcome the Lorient delegation.
President Michael D. Higgins will open a special commemorative exhibition at the Connacht Tribune Print Workshop at Market Street on Saturday the 19th at 2.30pm.
