Galway Bay fm newsroom – A quarter of all mortgages issued by Galway County Council are in arrears of more than 90 days.

Meanwhile, almost one in five home loans offered by Galway City Council are significantly behind on payments.

That’s according to information from the Department of Housing, which shows that one in six council mortgages nationwide have not been paid in a year.

One in four mortgages offered by Galway County Council are in arrears for more than 90 days.

The local authority has a total of almost 600 mortgages – which means some 150 are considerably behind on payments.

The figure for the City Council is somewhat of an improvement – however, almost one fifth of it’s 233 loans, or some 47 cases, are in arrears for more than 3 months.

Nationally, Kildare is the worst performing local authority – with half of almost 600 home loans facing arrears of more than 90 days.

Despite having the second highest number of mortgages in the country, just 11 percent of Fingal County Council’s 1,600 loans are in arrears.

According to the Irish Independent, just over half of almost 18,000 loans provided to borrowers nationwide are considered to be ‘performing’.
