Galway Bay fm newsroom – Efforts are continuing to tackle an invasive weed species on Lough Corrib.

Inland Fisheries Ireland is to continue to fund a programme for the management and removal of African pond weed.

The weed was discovered in the Corrib over a decade ago and can grow up to six metres tall.

It affects levels of fish stock and also hinders sail boats.

The IFI programme to tackle the problem was initiated three years ago but was due to expire in October.

Gaeltacht Minister and Galway West/South Mayo Fine Gael TD Sean Kyne says funding has now been extended.

Minister Kyne says it is possible to manage the weed, but the work involved is not straightforward.
