Galway Bay fm newsroom – Further arrangements were made at a meeting in Clifden last night to gather thousands of signatures in support of the development of the N. 59 – the main road from Galway to Clifden and north to Leenane.

The signature campaign is being organised by the N. 59 Action Campaign in the wake of a standstill on plans to upgrade the road.

This was described as an organisational meeting by the N. 59 Action Campaign with the objective of sparking off a community drive in support of the road development.

The thirty people who attended were told by Josie Conneely who chaired the meeting that the focus was on action; everybody, he said knew how bad the road was.

Seosamh Ó Cuaig, from the Campaign group said the time for speeches and waffle was over.

The fact that a decent road could not be developed in and out of Connemara was nothing short of a national scandal Ó Cuaig said and a community movement is badly needed.

Senator Trevor Ó Clochartaigh and Councillor Thomas Healy of Sinn Fein said that there was no question of a split in the effort.

While they would be organising a meeting in Maam Cross next week they would also be supporting the Action Groups petition.

More members were added the petition campaign team and the Action Campaign will also have a stand at the Clifden Show.
