Major surge in betting and attendance on Day 5 of Galway Races

Galway Bay fm newsroom – There was a major surge in attendance and betting at Day 5 of the Galway Racing Festival.

Over 27,000 people gathered at Ballybrit yesterday – over 5,500 more than the same day last year.

The Tote turnover for the fifth day was over 1.2 million euro – almost twice the amount recorded in 2015.

Betting with the bookies was also up by 145 thousand euro at over 1.3 million euro.

Golden Spear, ridden by Leigh Roche and trained by Tony Martin won the 100 thousand euro Guinness Handicap.

The Friday Fair Lady competition, sponsored by Athlone Towncentre was won by Bushypark woman Aoife O’Hanlon. (pictured)
