Galway Bay fm newsroom – County Council executives will meet with Athenry Oranmore councillors next week to discuss a road safety strategy for the district.
A proposal by Councillor James Charity has been passed unanimously at today’s meeting.
The proposal calls on the executive to work with councillors to set out a strategic policy for the area, which will focus on areas including busy local roads or ‘rat-runs,’ verge and hedge cutting, and other health and safety issues.
It follows a series of concerns in recent weeks over the condition of roads in the Athenry/Oranmore region – which is the most densely populated of Galway’s five municipal districts.
However, due to the fact that the district is the smallest in physical terms, it receives the lowest annual allocation for roads.
Councillor Charity says current policy protects council workers, but not the people who live or travel on busy local roads.
