Galway Bay fm newsroom – There has been a call for a ban to be placed on large scale cycle events on the roads of Connemara.

Connemara area Councillor Joe Folan has said that such events are now a serious hindrance to local people – and that there are also safety considerations involved on narrow and substandard roads.

Connemara has become a mecca for cycling events and cycling groups in recent years but that influx is becoming a problem for local people according to one of the area’s County Councillors, Joe Folan.

Councillor Folan says that local people are now being seriously inconvenienced by the cycling events and groups.

Those attending to their business, going to work, shopping and other personal issues are being held up, and sometimes put at risk by the cycling groups, Councillor Folan said.

He also said that such events and groups are often of little benefit to the area in economic terms; they leave Galway, Councillor Folan said and make a circle around to Maam Cross and back to the city.

Councillor Folan said nobody would question a smaller number of four or five cyclists but that Connemara roads were never meant for a large amount of participants together on bicycles.
