Galway Bay fm newsroom – Concerns have been raised about dangerous driving on some of the county’s main roads.
The County Joint Policing committee has heard fears over the growing number of tyre tracks left on roads across Galway by motorists performing a dangerous manoeuvre called a ‘donut.’
The move is being carried out on a regular basis on major routes including the M6 motorway, the N63, N17 and increasingly, on or near roundabouts.
Councillor James Charity also raised concerns over the use of ‘rat runs,’ by motorists attempting to avoid traffic congestion in Claregalway.
He says some drivers are speeding on small, local roads – posing a danger to themselves and other road users.
Chief Superintendent Tom Curley says the Gardaí are dependent on local communities to inform them of dangerous drivers, due to the large road network across Galway.
He says they’re working towards greater enforcement of traffic laws, and are focusing on problematic areas.
Gardaí say they also use the Garda helicopter to help detect dangerous drivers, particularly during the Galway Rally and other car-related events.
