Galway Bay fm newsroom – Irish Water has defended its efforts to improve drinking water quality for Carraroe.

A boil water notice was put in place in Carraroe in March.

The utility is being prosecuted by the Environmental Protection Agency and has been given more time to consider how it will plead in a prosecution for not implementing a plan to improve drinking water quality in the Connemara locality.

Irish Water says its plan is progressing but has encountered delays.

Pre-planning work progressed but plans were delayed by land restrictions and  Compulsory Purchase Order issues.

It concludes work is on target and it’s hoped that the boil water notice can be lifted by the end of the year following a stringent process proving period.

The €1 million investment being made by Irish Water is expected to improve water quality for over 3,350 people in the area.

In total Irish Water will invest €94 million in Galway’s water and wastewater infrastructure.

The utility says works have been prioritised to address the most critical issues in line with commitments outlined in Irish Water’s Business Plan.
