Galway Bay fm newsroom – Protestors are gathering in the city this lunchtime over the impending introduction of the new pay-by-weight system for bin charges, which mainly affect county areas.

The demonstration has been organised by Galway Sinn Féin, and is one of three major events taking place at County Hall this afternoon.

Galway Sinn Féin members have organised the protest over the new pay by weight bin charges system, which they are describing the system as ‘a new tax’ on householders.

The charges are due to kick in this day fortnight, the 1st of July.

People are now starting to gather for the protest which gets underway at 2.

At the moment, an unveiling ceremony is underway to honour those who contributed to the cause of Irish Independence between 1912 and 1922.

A sculpture of a swan was made by Jethro Sheen of Sheen Stone Works in Gort – it was specially commissioned by Galway County Council as part of its 1916 centenary programme.

The unveiling will be Councillor Peter Roche’s last event as cathaoirleach of the county.

He’ll hand over the chain of office at the council’s AGM later this afternoon.

It’s expected that Ballinasloe area Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Connolly will replace him as cathaoirleach.
