Galway Bay fm newsroom – A commemorative sculpture will be unveiled in the city this afternoon to honour those who contributed to the cause of Irish Independence.
The sculpture by Jethro Sheen of Sheen Stone Works in Gort was specially commissioned by Galway County Council as part of its 1916 centenary programme.
The outgoing County Cathaoirleach, Councillor Peter Roche, will unveil the sculpture at County Hall this lunchtime.
It will be Councillor Roche’s final engagement as cathaoirleach, as a new chair is due to be elected at the local authority’s AGM at 2.30.
The public event will feature a free open-air performance by the Ullapool Pipe Band from Scotland.
It gets underway at County Hall at 1 this afternoon.
