Emergency works urgently required at city castles

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A quarter of a million euro must be spent on short-term emergency works at some of the city’s castles.

City Council CEO Brendan McGrath told this week’s meeting at City Hall that the works are needed urgently and funds must be set aside in the 2017 budget.

Councillors heard that in one case stones are falling from the roof, while in another antisocial behaviour is an issue.

The city chief also stated that the presentation of Browne Doorway is not reflecting well on the city and doing nothing is not an option.

His comments followed the approval of the Heritage Plan for the city.

Jim Higgins, Galway City Council Heritage Officer says the city’s castles are a key part of our heritage and tourism offering.
