Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway’s Island farmers are set to benefit from the commencement of payments under the new Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme.
The scheme was introduced in May to replace the disadvantaged Areas Scheme and has now begun distributing funds of one million euro to 900 farmers nationwide.
Galway West TD Sean Kyne says the european-funded ANC Scheme is designed to boost island economies and preserve their unique habitats.
The scheme is payable to farmers carrying out agricultural activity on off-shore islands which have no permanent access by road or bridge.
Deputy Kyne says the payments recognise the challenging circumstances faced by Galway’s island farmers.
