Galway Bay fm newsroom – Portumna’s Castle Harbour is open to vessels for berthing this bank holiday weekend, following extensive renovation and upgrade.

Waterways Ireland carried out the works, which included doubling the mooring capacity, upgrading berths, re-paving the quay area and the installation of cut stone walls.

While the harbour is now open to boats, works are continuing to onshore services including the upgrade of the service block, car park and services for camper vans.

This work is expected to be completed in early September.

Local Fianna Fáil Councillor Ivan Canning says it’s vital that Portumna is accessible from the water.

Meanwhile,
Thoor Ballylee in Gort is set to re-open this weekend after it was devastated by floods during the winter period. (Saturday 4/6)

The iconic tower was home to W.B Yeats during the 1920s.

The tower has been refurbished following significant water damage.

An official opening by President of Ireland Michael D Higgins’ wife Sabina will take place later this month. (Saturday 18th June)

Thoor Ballylee will be open to visitors throughout the bank holiday weekend between 10am and 3pm.
