Galway Bay Fm newsroom- A meeting between management and nurses at UHG over ongoing issues at the hospital’s psychiatric unit is being described as ‘constructive’.

The meeting was held to discuss the implementation of a ruling made by the Workplace Relations Commission over concerns including staffing levels and healthy and safety measures.

The Psychiatric Nurses Association says that while there are on-going problems with sourcing nurses, progress has been made with regards staff rostering and other measures.

Meanwhile, Psychiatric nurses at UHG are currently being balloted for industrial action over the ‘staffing crisis’ in mental health services nationwide.

There are over 600 vacancies around the country, with 400 more forecast due to expected retirements.

PNA spokesperson Peter Hughes says communities are suffering as a result of the crisis
