Galway Bay fm newsroom – Several Loughrea residents have been diagnosed with Cryptosporidiosis as concerns over Irish Water’s communication of the area’s boil water notice continue.
The matter has been discussed at a meeting of the Loughrea district.
County Councillors Michael Moegie Maher and Shane Donnellan say they’ve contacted the utility on several occasions over the past two months – but have only received automated replies.
Councillors have access to a separate email address for queries they have about the water network in their area, but claim the utility is ignoring their requests for information.
At a meeting of the Loughrea district this week, concerns were raised over Irish Water’s communication of the long-standing boil water notice which remains in place for Loughrea and the surrounding area.
The notice affects several thousand residents and was put in place following the discovery of Cryptosporidium.
The bug causes vomiting and diarrhoea and can be dangerous for the elderly, very young children or anyone who has an immuno-deficiency disorder.
County Council director of services Jim Cullen says if Irish Water is not responding to queries, it’s a very serious matter.
He says a leaflet drop, or delivery of boil notice information with a customer’s bill is required to make sure all residents know of the restriction.
It’ll be at least another month before the testing, sampling and flushing of the Loughrea water supply is completed.
Councillor Michael Moegie Maher says progress is being made, but local residents need to be kept informed.
