Galway Bay fm newsroom – Galway county council say a public consultation was held three years ago about the bridge in Moycullen which is now the location of a public protest

In a statement to Galway Bay fm news official Liam Gavin says people were aware of the planning process and the proposed works at Clydagh Bridge

Mr Gavin says the replacement of the bridge formed a large part of the discussions of the 3 day An Bord Pleanala oral hearing in 2012

Residents who have been protesting at the location since 6.30 this morning say they naively felt the 200 year old bridge would be conserved and would not be architecturally different

Mr Gavin says the council entered into a contract for the bridge replacement on the basis of valid permission from An Bord Pleanala and work is underway

On the other side of the coin concerns are being raised that any postponement of the works will have serious economic implications for the village of Moycullen coming up to the Christmas season.

The County’s Chief Executive has agreed to meet with the objecting Moycullen residents over the controversial demolition of Clydagh Bridge.

Galway West TD Sean Kyne says Chief Executive Kevin Kelly has stated he has no objection to meeting with locals over their concerns, and it’s hoped such a meeting will take place today.

Speaking to Keith Finnegan, Deputy Kyne says many locals just want the job done right.
