Galway Bay fm newsroom – Over half a million tonnes of goods were handled at Galway port last year.
That’s according to the latest iShip figures from the Irish Maritime Development Office.
The majority of goods which passed through Galway Port last year were liquid bulk.
Over 405 thousand tonnes of liquid bulk – which includes fuel oils, bitumen, and molasses – was handled by the Harbour Company.
Dry bulk accounted for over 141 thousand tonnes – this category includes items such as coal, cement, fertiliser, animal feed and alumina.
A further 15 thousand tonnes of ‘break bulk’ passed through the port last year – an increase of 55 percent on the previous year.
Break bulk goods include timber, steel products and machinery.
Nationally, the IMDO is reporting string growth through Irish ports, with an overall increase of 7% in port traffic last year.
