Gender quotas recommended for NUIG following inquiry

Galway Bay fm newsroom Mandatory gender quotas are being recommended to promote female academics at NUI Galway.

The proposals come as a result of an inquiry on gender balance following a gender discrimination case taken against the college last year.

According to today’s Irish Times, women hold just over half of all lecturer posts at NUIG.

However, only 30 per cent of senior lecturers are women and only 10 per cent are in associate professor roles.

14 per cent of full professors at NUIG are women.

An inquiry was set up last year after Dr. Micheline Sheehy Skeffington won an Equality Tribunal case against the university.

A draft report from that inquiry recommends gender quotas at NUIG to ensure more women are promoted to senior academic posts.

The report also recommends that all committees and working groups at the university should have a minimum of 40 per cent of women by the end of this year and half of the chairs of these committees should be women by the end of 2018.

NUIG recently appointed Professor Anne Scott as Vice-President for Equality and Diversity, the first apppointment of its kind at an Irish university.
