Galway Bay fm newsroom – 50 people are on trolleys at UHG this afternoon.
Trolley Watch figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives organisation have revealed that 35 people are on trolleys in the emergency department, awaiting admission – a further 15 patients are waiting in over-capacity wards.
UHG is the worst affected hospital in the country today with regard to overcrowding.
The Full Capacity Protocol has been implemented as a result.
Management says all efforts are being made to identify patients who are suitable for discharge, and non-urgent elective procedures have been deferred.
Patients are advised only to attend the ED at UHG in a genuine emergency, and to attend their GP in the first instance.
