Galway Bay fm newsroom – An Post is meeting with locals in Cleggan about the termination of the postal agency service in the village around now.

This afternoon’s meeting follows the announcement earlier this month that the arrangement for the service would not be renewed once the shop owner retired.

A postal agency is not a full post office but provides services such as the payment of Social Welfare and pensions.

The new operator of the shop in Cleggan previously offering the facility had expressed an interest in continuing the postal agency.

However, An Post confirmed this month that such arrangements are no longer part of its national network and there are no plans to renew the agency in the village.

Locals will now have to travel to Claddaghduff post office to collect social welfare payments.

Galway West T.D Seán Kyne has organised this afternoon’s meeting between locals and An Post officials to allow them to put their case forward.

However, it’s been stated that today’s meeting is a matter of discussion and clarification, rather than one of negotiation.
