Galway Bay fm newsroom – A court order has been served on a growing Traveller encampment at Ballyloughane.
It follows the significant growth of the illegal site in recent days – just several weeks after another encampment was moved at the same location by a previous court order.
It’s understood that up to eight caravans are now residing at the carpark at Ballyloughane Beach.
Councillor Terry O’ Flaherty says that in order to gain access to the site, obstacles designed to prevent illegal entry were removed.
She says that if the occupants refuse to move, the matter will come before Galway Courthouse tomorrow – at continued expense to the tax payer.
She says the security costs alone associated with illegal encampments at City Hall and Ballyloughnane in recent weeks have cost almost 6 thousand euro.
Councillor O’ Flaherty says the City Council needs to take action to ensure the carpark at Ballyloughane is safe-guarded in future.
