Galway Bay fm newsroom – The vehicle stolen in a Mountbellew carjacking has been recovered and a man arrested in Co. Monaghan.

It follows an incident on Thursday when a man stole an SUV at the Square in the East Galway village, with two occupants inside.

The shocking incident happened near the Bridge Bar around 12.30p.m on Thursday when a man knocked a woman to the ground and bundled her into the Hyundai Santa Fe jeep she was travelling in with her brother.

The culprit drove the SUV with its two occupants in it, to a wooded area in Ballygar where he released them and then made off with the vehicle.

Both the woman and her brother, who are in their 50s, were uninjured but were left shaken.

The man, who is in his 40’s and has no fixed address, was arrested by Gardai in Co. Monaghan yesterday and the Hyundai Santa Fe jeep was recovered.

It’s understood the man was arrested on outstanding charges – and will appear before the courts in Monaghan over the coming days before being interviewed by Mountbellew Gardai about Thursday’s carjacking.

Gardai say no link has been established between that incident and a similar incident in Dunmore last week, in which a car was stolen with an elderly woman inside.

However, they will be investigating the possibility that both events are connected over the coming days.
