When they last met:
Incredibly, this Sunday is the first time that Mountbellew Moylough and Salthill Knocknacarra will meet in the Senior Football Championship. Salthill Knocknacarra have appeared in 6 county finals since they first played in the senior ranks in 1984, winning 3 and losing 3, while Mountbellew Moylough have only made it one county final since their last title came in 1986, that was in 2009 when they lost in a replay to Corofin. Ironically, Mountbellew’s captain in their 1986 county final win over Milltown was Val Daly, who will manage Salthill Knocknacarra against his old club, and his two sons, on Sunday!
Corofin and Cortoon Shamrocks famously locked horns in the county final of 2008 when Corofin came out on top 0-8 to 0-5 in Pearse Stadium, but their last encounter in Tuam Stadium was in 2012 when Corofin edged a thrilling game 0-14 to 0-12 thanks to 2 injury time points from Alan O’Donovan. The sides were level on no fewer than eight occasions in that game, with Cortoon leading 0-7 to 0-6 at the break. It was nip and tuck during a tense second half but Corofin eventually took the initiative with points from Daithi Burke and O’Donovan again to lead 0-11 to 0-9 with 10 minutes to go. Joseph Donnellan and Paul Varley levelled for a spirited Shamrocks side, who had to rely on David Warde to level matters again with a free in the final minute after O’Donovan gave Corofin the lead with a similar score. 0-12 each going into injury time it felt like the next score would win and Cortoon’s chance looked to have gone when Cathal Mulryan shot wide their best chance and so it proved when O’Donovan rescued the champions with a couple of late trademark points to seal a place in the quarter finals.
