Galway-based Supermacs has withdrawn its application to expand the brand to Australia.
However, the boss of the fast-food chain, Pat McDonagh, says it’s a purely ‘tactical’ strategy.
According to today’s Irish Times, a new application will be lodged to expand the brand name to Australia in the next two months.
The initial application was made in March 2014 with the first franchise planned to open at Bondi junction in Sydney later that year.
However, plans for the expansion ‘Down Under’ were stalled because of an appeal by competitor McDonalds to the Australian Government.
Recently Supermacs was granted permission for a trademark in Europe, however due to another appeal by McDonalds it would be prevented from selling most of its food produce.
Pat McDonagh has confirmed that he will appeal that decision by the EU Office for Harmonisation in the Internal Market.
He says that Supermacs has learned a lot from the European decision and is therefore adjusting the Australian application accordingly.
