Athenry Mart continues bid to build mixed use development

Galway Bay fm newsroom – A bid to build a mixed-use development in Athenry is continuing.

Athenry Co-Op Livestock Mart was refused planning permission by the county council to build a shop, office and warehouse at Prospect last month.

However, they have now appealed that decision to An Bord Pleanála.

The county council refused permission for the development at Prospect Athenry stating that it would be premature pending the upgrade of the town’s wastewater treatment plant.

The council also said that it would endanger public safety by being a traffic hazard.

In an appeal to An Bord Pleanála, Athenry Mart says that it has its own private sewage treatment plant which treats effluent on mart sales days.

The mart group says the effluent generated by the proposed development would be small.

Also Athenry Mart argues that it held pre-planning meetings with the county council Roads Department and was advised that a Road Safety Audit or Traffic Impact Assessment would not be needed.

It says that any heavy goods vehicles accessing the site would use the main existing mart entrance.

A decision is due from An Bord Pleanála in July.
