Galway Bay fm newsroom – The public’s faith in the doctors at University Hospital Galway has been seriously shaken following the controversy over a doctor who was unable to tell an ankle from an elbow.

That’s according to Councillor Padraig Conneely, who says that the incident is a clear indication that the HSE’s procedure for hiring doctors is not fit for purpose.

The matter arose at this week’s meeting of the Regional Health Forum West, where Councillor Conneely demanded to know how Dr Omar Hassan was accepted into the system.

In January, Dr Hassan was found guilty by a Medical Council fitness to practise inquiry of 28 counts of poor professional performance and six counts of professional misconduct while working at hospitals in Galway, Portlaoise and Castlebar.

The concern over HSE hiring procedures was echoed by Councillor Donagh Killilea, who claims that the last few cases taken before the medical council all involved doctors from outside the EU.

Councillor Padraig Conneely says that people deserve to have faith in the doctors treating them.
