Galway Bay fm newsroom – The Barroughter and Clonmoylan Bogs Action Group is calling on the Galway East election candidates to tackle the issues facing turf-cutters.
The group says the designation of the two bogs as Special Areas of Conservation has impacted on at least 900 families who want to cut their own turf on their own land.
The group has issued a questionnaire to the Galway East candidates on the matter, and says it will publish the reponses it receives from the Dáil hopefuls.
They have already received a number of responses from candidates – but others, including a number of outgoing TDs, have yet to reply.
Turfcutters in the area want to establish the approach each candidate would take in a bid to solve the long-running problem.
