Galway Bay fm newsroom – The County Council will temporarily re-open the former Greenstar landfill site in Kilconnell in April.
It’s the first step in the local authority’s plan to permanently close the facility.
The Kilconnell landfill closed in 2013 after Greenstar went into receivership, and the council took over the site.
Works are underway to open up the full capacity of the original site – seven landfill cells are already full, but have yet to be permanently capped to prevent environmental contamination.
Two cells remain empty, but these will be opened to waste collectors from April under a licence which allows the deposit of 100 thousand tonnes of waste per year.
The waste will then be allowed to settle for a year before the council begins permanently closing them off and reinstating the land.
Once full, it will take around 2 years to permanently restore the site.
