Galway Bay fm newsroom – It’s being claimed a recent meeting to discuss solutions for displaced Traveller families in the city was totally unsatisfactory – as the encampment at Knocknacarra continues to grow.
Margaret O’ Riada of Galway Traveller Movement says they asked the County Council for a piece of land to house the families – but were told the answer was no.
She says the only option offered was that families present themselves to homeless services – an option she says is not acceptable or suitable to most Traveller families.
Speaking to Keith Finnegan, Margaret O’ Riada says providing land for Traveller families is the best solution for all involved.
Meanwhile, Councillor Donal Lyons says the Traveller encampment at Knocknacarra has doubled in size – with 8 families now on a road side near Millar’s Lane and the Hibernia building.
He told Keith Finnegan that he understands that the families are in a difficult situation but the location is completely unsuitable for the encampment.
